Benefits of Going Greek

Sisterhood
A sisterhood is often referred to as an organization of women with a common interest, as for social, charitable, business, or political purposes or a congenial relationship or companionship among women. To the Greek women at Cal Poly Pomona, sisterhood is a life-long personal relationship of shared values and experiences. "From the outside looking in you can never understand it. From the inside looking out you can never explain it."
Cal Poly Pomona is a "commuter school" and many students have a lack of necessity to get involved. Greek life is a great opportunity to get involved in many aspects of academics, service, and leadership. For those students far from home, Greek life is a sense of home.

Academics
Academics is the top priority among the four Panhellenic Sororities. As a campus requirement, every Sorority must maintain a GPA above the All-Women's Average. As well as campus requirements, each individual Sorority has their own GPA requirements to maintain active member status. There is a wide range of majors among the Greek women at Cal Poly , from business to agriculture, science to engineering or liberal studies to foreign language. Greek women are filled with information concerning professors, classes and majors and they can provide free tutoring in any concerned subjects.
Along with the benefits that come within the Panhellenic Sorority chapters, there are plenty of opportunities that help the furtherance of academia in the Greek community. Each Panhellenic Sorority's national offices have a scholarship fund for their active members. Cal Poly has a Greek Honor Society, Order of Omega, which can be entered during the third year at Cal Poly honoring and broadcasting your accomplishments and dedication.

Leadership
Becoming a Greek woman opens up plenty of leadership opportunities. Each chapter has an elected executive board, appointed positions and committees. Many Greek women strive higher and run for positions on Cal Poly's Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) which provide amazing opportunities to open up to the campus' student body. Sororities require active members to be involved in an outside organization and are encouraged to run for positions within the clubs and organizations.

Community Service

Philanthropic involvement is a main focus among our Panhellenic Sororities. Each Sorority has their own specific philanthropy but all Sororities participate in many other community service through the year. Each Sorority holds at least one event a year where all Sororities and Fraternities are involved to raise money for their specific philanthropy. The Greek community comes together during a week (Greek Week) Spring quarter to raise money for a chosen philanthropy. Greek Week tests the strengths of each Sorority and Fraternity and this week represents Cal Poly Pomona's Panhellenic open motto, coming together to achieve a common goal.

Networking

Today those who actively participated in their Panhellenic Sorority throughout college will stay in touch with their chapters long after graduation. Joining a Panhellenic Sorority will allow you to connect and establish relationships with alumni. Alumni can offer excellent advice, and will inform you of potential employment opportunities.

Hazing

Cal Poly Pomona has a strict NO HAZING policy. Our Panhellenic Sororities DO NOT HAZE

"You wouldn't haze your friends. Why would you haze your Sisters? The goal of pledgeship is to be a member of a house; to make you want to be a Sister, Where does hazing fit in? Quite simply, it doesn't. Why abuse someone for three months in the name of becoming their best friends? A Sorority is not about building pledges. It's about building Sisters."
